Former Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimović missed the 5:1 opening victory of his former national team at the World Cup and instead attended a UFC fight in Monterrey.
Sweden starts with a landslide win
The Swedish national football team has launched into the World Cup with a clear success. The team celebrated a 5:1 opening victory on the previous matchday, but the country's most prominent ex-player was missing from the jubilant celebrations back home – and from the stadium as well. As the Swedish newspaper "Expressen" reported, Zlatan Ibrahimović had set other priorities. He traveled to Mexico to watch a UFC fight live.
Among the Swedish professionals, this decision did cause some bewilderment. "He should have prioritized our match," "Expressen" quoted midfielder Jesper Karlström as saying. His disappointment that their most famous ex-player was not cheering them on was evident. Other teammates reacted more calmly to the absence of the 44-year-old.
