The 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany will be opened with an outdoor game at the Arena on Schalke in Gelsenkirchen, where the German national team will face the vice world champions from Switzerland on May 8, 2027.

The 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany begins with a revival of the historic world record game from 2010. As the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and the world governing body IIHF announced on Wednesday, the German national team will play the opening game in the Gelsenkirchen football arena against the archrival and current vice world champions from Switzerland. The world federation is thus tying in with a memorable chapter of ice hockey history that was written at the very same place almost two decades ago.

In 2010, 77,803 spectators came to the Arena on Schalke for the opening game between Germany and the USA thanks to additional stands in the interior – a world record that still stands today. The DEB team won that game 2:1 in overtime. The president of the organizing committee, Claus Gröbner, expressly praised the decision: „Gelsenkirchen schrieb im Jahr 2010 Eishockey-Geschichte. Dass die Eishockey-Weltmeisterschaft 2027 in Deutschland mit einem solchen Highlight beginnt, ist etwas ganz Besonderes."
