Reykjavik, August 30, 2026
Icelanders voted on Saturday in a referendum on whether the government in Reykjavik should resume the EU accession negotiations that have been frozen for years, and partial results point to an extremely narrow outcome.
The vote is considered decisive for the future foreign policy orientation of the North Atlantic island nation. According to current partial results, the camp of supporters is now narrowly behind with 47.5 percent of the votes. 52.5 percent are against the government's proposal to resume EU accession negotiations. This is reported by the broadcaster RUV.
The figures are based on nearly 190,000 counted votes. Since not all ballots have yet been recorded, the result could still shift by the time the final count is completed. The public broadcaster RUV is reporting continuously on the receipt of further votes.
