Brussels, September 7, 2026

The EU has announced extensive investments in Greenland to strengthen fisheries, education, and infrastructure on the island, which belongs to Denmark.

According to its own statements, the European Union plans extensive investments in Greenland. As the EU Commission announced, the funds are to flow primarily into fisheries, the education system, and the expansion of infrastructure. Greenland left the EU in 1985 but has long received financial resources from Brussels, particularly for fishing rights and educational programs.

Geopolitical background

The backdrop to this initiative is also the growing geopolitical interest in the Arctic region. With this investment package, the EU is responding to repeated announcements by Donald Trump that the USA could take over Greenland or be more strongly present there militarily and economically. According to its own statements, Brussels wants to prevent the island from coming under increasing pressure from major powers.
