A 34-year-old Australian woman gave birth to identical quadruplet girls via cesarean section on July 14 at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital; the treating physician estimates the probability of such a naturally occurring pregnancy at approximately one in 15 million.

The four babies were delivered by cesarean section on July 14, as the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital announced. The girls are named Emily, Harriet, Alexa, and Catherine. According to the treating specialist, Dr. Alexa Bendall, the children were born at 28 weeks and four days of gestation—significantly before the expected due date. After the birth, the mother and her partner Jortham have a total of eight children aged between zero and ten.

The case is remarkable from a medical perspective primarily because the four embryos developed from a single fertilized egg that split multiple times. The babies shared one placenta in the womb but each had their own amniotic sac. A quadruplet pregnancy with a shared placenta carries significant health risks for both the unborn children and the mother, according to Dr. Alexa Bendall's assessment.
