The trade policy of Donald Trump is slowing investment in German industry and entrenching the tariff burden for companies, according to the Ifo Institute.

More than 60 percent of the industrial companies in Germany surveyed by the Ifo Institute report negative impacts from US tariff policy. The automotive sector is particularly affected: 74 percent of companies in this segment say they are burdened by US tariffs — an increase of 14 percentage points compared with the previous year. Ifo foreign trade expert Andreas Baur said on Tuesday that the auto industry is doubly affected: "Die Autoindustrie ist doppelt betroffen: durch hohe Zölle und rückläufige Exporte in die USA."

In Baur's assessment, the burden from tariffs has become entrenched. "Die Zollbelastung hat sich verfestigt, statt sich abzuschwächen," he stated at an event hosted by the OECD Berlin Centre. Sixty-three percent of the companies surveyed expect the US tariff level to remain unchanged at a high level. Another 13 percent even anticipate rising tariffs.
