Tens of thousands of employees of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen demonstrated nationwide on Friday against the cost-cutting plans of the two groups, triggering a wave of protest in the German auto industry.

Wave of Protests at Multiple Locations

According to union figures, around 33,000 employees took part in the day of action. At the Hamburg Mercedes plant alone, more than 300 employees gathered at the factory gate, according to IG Metall, while in East Frisian Emden, more than 4,000 workers at the VW plant protested against the cost-cutting plans of the Lower Saxony-based carmaker, the union said. In Bremen, around 5,000 employees took part, according to union figures. Mercedes Group Works Council Chief Ergun Lümali spoke at a rally on Friday in Sindelfingen about dissatisfaction with management's plans and a dismantling of the welfare state: "Die Beschäftigten sind mit den Plänen des Vorstands und des Abbaus des Sozialstaats nicht einverstanden."
