In the Philippine Senate, the first impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte began in the afternoon (local time). If convicted, she faces the loss of her office and a permanent ban from public office.
The Senate opened the proceedings against the 48-year-old in the afternoon (local time). This is the first time in the Southeast Asian archipelago that a vice president has had to answer to the Senate sitting as an impeachment court. It is also the first impeachment proceedings against a senior state official in 14 years.
Duterte, daughter of the controversial former president Rodrigo Duterte, who served as head of state from 2016 to 2022, faces charges including embezzlement of public funds, unjustified accumulation of wealth, and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Duterte rejects all charges and speaks of a politically motivated proceeding.
