Indonesia is deploying cloud seeding on Borneo and Sumatra to combat forest fires that have been raging for several months by generating artificial rainfall.

Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and the Ministry of Forestry have announced a rain-promoting measure to contain the forest fires on Borneo and Sumatra. Clouds will be artificially induced to produce rain through a procedure intended to extinguish the flames in the affected regions.

The fires have already been active for several months. Firefighters continue to work at the burn sites, while the affected areas include South Sumatra, South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

Scale of the forest fires

According to an independent satellite analysis by the Nusantara Atlas observation project, approximately 1.9 million hectares nationwide were affected by fires between January and September 2026. The analysis was corroborated by two other sources.
