The Singapore-based ASMC Meteorological Centre has declared the highest alert level for Southeast Asia because of the continuing wildfires in Indonesia and is warning of severe transboundary haze.
Scale of the fires
According to the centre’s Friday report, eleven major fires were active in Indonesia, covering more than 120,000 hectares. The fire areas extend from eastern Sumatra through Kalimantan and the Moluccas to neighbouring Timor-Leste. The situation in the region has therefore worsened further after an increased number of fires were reported in the preceding days.
The centre, located near Changi Airport, uses a four-tier alert system ranging from zero to three. The highest level is triggered when there is a “high risk of severe transboundary haze”. The ASMC now considers this condition to be met and has declared alert level three.
