Wildfires in Spain, France, Greece, and Turkey have cost the lives of several emergency personnel and driven tens of thousands of people to flee, while authorities warn of an extreme and persistent fire situation across the region.

The wildfire season in Southern Europe has intensified significantly this summer. In Spain, the hardest-hit country, fire services are battling numerous simultaneously active fire fronts according to national agencies. In France, Greece, and Turkey, major fires are also out of control, entire villages have been evacuated, and holiday areas along the Mediterranean coast have seen an influx of people seeking safety.
