The inflation rate in Austria stood at 3.7% year-on-year in May 2025, according to the flash estimate published Tuesday by the federal statistical office Statistik Austria, an increase from the 3.4% recorded in April.

An Acceleration Driven by Services

This preliminary estimate, which constitutes the first official reading of consumer price trends for May, signals a marked return of inflationary pressure in the country. The institute indicated that the general price level increased by approximately 0.1% compared to the previous month, reflecting a contained but very real acceleration on a monthly basis.

One of the determining factors of this acceleration remains the services sector. According to provisional data, prices in this sector rose by 4.4% year-on-year in May, a faster pace than in April, which stood at 4.1%. The Director General of Statistik Austria, Manuela Lenk, emphasized that services remain "nach wie vor der größte Inflationstreiber," meaning the main driver of inflation. This dynamic is notably attributable to the surge in airfare prices, which contributed significantly to the rise in costs in the tertiary sector.
