ING Deutschland plans to launch a credit card ahead of the Christmas season

According to the company, the credit card is to be offered as an additional product alongside the existing account. The company has so far declined to provide details on the exact terms, possible annual fees, or partner programs.

Expansion of the digital offering

ING Deutschland CEO Lars Stoy had already announced the plans for an in-house credit card, emphasizing that the institution intends to significantly expand its offering in the payments space. He also pointed to the rapidly growing number of cashless transactions in Germany.

With the new product, the direct bank is entering a market that has so far been shaped by traditional high-street banks, but also by fintechs and specialized card issuers. Many competitors already offer their own credit card models with various bonus and cashback programs.

The introduction of the credit card is part of ING Deutschland's broader growth strategy in its retail banking business. Over the past years, the institution has continuously expanded its customer base through digital offerings and an aggressive pricing policy.

Market environment and competition

Observers view the planned move as a logical next step: those who already hold a free or low-cost salary account frequently expect a matching credit card from the same provider. This could enable ING Deutschland to generate additional revenue, for example through interchange fees and partner commissions.

For customers, the introduction means that in future they will no longer be obliged to rely on cards from other providers to pay online or abroad. This could be particularly relevant for younger customer groups, who already make less use of a traditional branch banking model.
