Germany's Federal Statistical Office has reported a new record high in revenues from inheritance and gift tax.
Political Debate over Reform
The increase comes at a time when politicians from various parties are discussing reforms of inheritance tax law. The SPD has most recently demanded higher rates and a reform of the preferential treatment of business assets. Calls for a greater contribution from large heirs to state revenues have also come from circles of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) as well as from the academic side, including the Council of Economic Experts.
Data from the Federal Statistical Office show that revenues from inheritance and gift tax have risen significantly compared to earlier reporting periods. According to economists, this is due, among other things, to an increased number of large wealth transfers as well as rising property and corporate values. Economist Sebastian Dullien, scientific director of the Institute of Macroeconomics and Economic Research (IMK), had pointed out in earlier analyses the connection between wealth distribution and inheritance tax.
