Insolvent drug manufacturer R-Pharm on the brink: Plant in Illertissen set to close

History of a long-established site

The transformation into a modern drug manufacturer produced a multitude of products over the decades, including preparations that played a role in supply in Bavaria and beyond. The Illertissen site was considered a firm part of the southern German pharmaceutical landscape and most recently employed several hundred staff members.

The company had maintained silence in recent weeks about the exact reasons for the insolvency. Most recently, it had sought to place greater emphasis on development with the establishment of a biotech division. This attempt to open up new business areas could no longer avert the decline.

Reasons for the insolvency

In addition to the immediate consequences for the workforce and their families, observers also fear negative impacts on the supply of certain medicines in the region. The closure would be a further blow to the already strained situation of pharmaceutical production in Germany, which has suffered for years from rising costs and international competitive pressure.

The course of the insolvency also casts a spotlight on the US pharmaceutical group Pfizer, whose role as a contractual partner and licensee had shaped events in Illertissen over the years. Liabilities towards international partners are considered one of the factors that are said to have additionally burdened the company's financial situation.

In the region, questions are now being raised about possible investors or a takeover by other manufacturers. Observers consider it unlikely that a buyer will be found at short notice to continue the site in its current form. Nevertheless, talks with interested parties are not ruled out.

Political reactions and outlook

Employees, trade unions, and Bavarian state politics are responding with concern to the development. In Munich, Minister-President Markus Söder had also repeatedly pointed out in the past the importance of the pharmaceutical industry for the Free State. Now the economic policy consequences of the imminent end of the Illertissen plant are coming more to the fore.

The war in Ukraine and the associated sanctions against Russian ownership structures, which had left their mark in the company's books, are also considered an aggravating factor. Industry insiders point out that sanctions-related burdens further exacerbated the already fragile economic situation.

In the coming weeks, an official statement from the insolvency administrators and initial concrete steps for the winding up of the site are expected. The affected staff members are to be further qualified and placed in the labour market within the framework of transfer companies.
