Interior Ministers Consult on Accelerated Drone Defense Technology at Airports Following Drone Incident

Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster emphasized that the Saxon state government, together with the airport operator, is working with great urgency to ensure that Leipzig/Halle Airport is treated with the highest priority in the federal equipping with drone defense and drone detection technology. In the special conference call, Schuster stated verbatim: „Die sächsische Staatsregierung setzt sich gemeinsam mit dem Flughafenbetreiber mit Nachdruck dafür ein, dass der Flughafen Leipzig/Halle bei der Ausstattung mit Drohnenabwehrtechnik und Drohnendetektion durch den Bund äußerst prioritär und in vorderster Reihe entsprechend ausgerüstet wird - gerade vor dem Hintergrund der zentralen Bedeutung als einer der größten europäischen Frachtflughäfen“.

Schuster's Proposal: Leipzig/Halle as a Priority

The consultations took place against the backdrop of a surge in drone incidents at German airports in recent months. In addition to Leipzig/Halle, the airports of Hanover, Berlin Brandenburg (BER), and Bremen were also affected in the past weeks. The ministers therefore see, by their own assessment, an increased need to rapidly expand drone detection and defense capabilities.

According to information from the circle of interior ministers, the participants agreed to keep the concrete contents of the special conference call confidential. Nevertheless, it subsequently became clear that the states are aiming for accelerated equipping, particularly of cargo and hub airports, and are counting on financial and technological participation by the federal government.

From the perspective of the states' chamber, the defense against small, commercially available drones that can be equipped with explosives or other dangerous objects constitutes a new type of threat landscape. The existing legal and technical instruments have so far not been sufficiently tailored to such scenarios, it was stated in the special conference call.

Consequences for the Economy and Logistics

Schuster pointed to the special significance of Leipzig/Halle as one of Europe's largest cargo airports, where supply chains for the entire economy converge. An outage or impairment of this location would therefore have immediate effects beyond Saxony on the supply of goods as well as on logistics throughout Central Germany.

The interior ministers announced that further consultations with the Federal Ministry of the Interior as well as with airport operators would take place in the coming weeks. The goal is to agree on a binding timetable in the short term for the retrofitting of detection systems and jamming devices and to present this at the next regular conference of interior ministers.

Aviation security experts have long pointed out that conventional airport security is primarily designed for large, manned aircraft and for the area within the airport fence. Drones, on the other hand, require their own sensor technology that can detect and classify even the smallest objects on approach, as well as the ability to neutralize them in a targeted manner.

Next Steps in Federal-State Relations

With regard to the ongoing investigation into the incident at Leipzig/Halle, the participants referred to the responsible law enforcement authorities. Details on possible suspects, the device used, or the exact sequence of events were not disclosed, in order not to jeopardize the investigation.
