Herbert Reul has called for clear responsibilities in drone defense following renewed drone incidents at airports and federal properties, while also requesting federal assistance.

Initial situation: Drone sightings at airports

The debate over how to deal with drones in civil aviation has intensified in recent days. Reul pointed to incidents in North Rhine-Westphalia and at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where drones were sighted in the approach area. These sightings disrupted flight operations and posed significant challenges for the security authorities.

At the same time, Reul made clear that state police forces are reaching their limits when it comes to drone defense. Effective danger prevention requires federal resources, particularly those of the Federal Police and the Bundeswehr. Reul described it as unacceptable that, in an emergency, it would be unclear who has which powers and what technical means may be deployed.
