An international study published on June 1, 2026, involving 679 mathematics teachers and over 17,500 students from eight countries, shows that teachers' emotions are a central factor for learning success.
The research, published in the 'Journal of Educational Psychology', is titled 'Linking Teacher Emotions, Teaching Quality Indicators, and Student Outcomes in Mathematics: Results From the Global Teaching InSights Study'. It was conducted in schools in Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
Researchers found that teacher joy is associated with better classroom management, more positive teacher-student relationships, and cognitively more demanding instruction. In contrast, anger in teachers is linked to poorer classroom management, worse relationships with students, and less cognitively stimulating tasks.
