An analysis by the Correctiv research network shows that the European Environment Agency (EEA) measures only two types of fecal bacteria when assessing EU bathing waters and does not take into account chemical pollutants or other pathogens.
What the EEA measures - and what it does not
According to research by the portal "Correctiv," the EEA's assessments are based solely on measurements of two types of fecal bacteria. Other pathogens and dozens of chemical pollutants, by contrast, are not taken into account at all, even though the EU agency also has data on these for bathing waters. The discrepancy between the official assessments and the actual contamination present is at the center of the criticism.
