Los Angeles, July 7, 2026

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has provisionally lifted Russia's Olympic exclusion imposed after Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, meaning Russian athletes could once again compete at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

At the meeting of the IOC Executive Board, it was decided to provisionally lift the ban on the Russian federation. As the IOC announced, Russian teams could thus return to international competitions. "Bei der großen Sitzung des Exekutivkomitees wurde beschlossen, dass die Sperre gegen den russischen Verband wieder aufgehoben wird", it was stated.

Russia could therefore return to competition precisely at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Russian athletes would thus be allowed, among other things, to take part in the qualifiers for the 2028 Summer Games. It remains unclear, however, under what conditions they will be permitted to appear at the Olympics themselves.

IOC Decision

For under their own flag and anthem, Russian athletes and teams will for the time being not be allowed to compete at Olympic Games at least. The decision on this will be made at a later date. However, in other competitions such as tennis or cycling, athletes can once again compete under the Russian flag.
