The Russian Athletics Federation is fighting back legally against its ongoing ban by World Athletics and has filed an appeal with the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). World Athletics announced its intention to "vigorously defend" its position.

The Russian Athletics Federation has filed an appeal with the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding its ongoing suspension by the world governing body, thereby taking the matter before the highest jurisdiction in sport.

The national federation justified the move with regard to the future of Russian sport. It stated that the "fundamental interests of athletics in Russia" were being compromised. According to the Russian federation's account, the move to Lausanne follows years of attempts to return to international competition – so far without success. The appeal to CAS marks the provisional climax of this conflict.

On the side of World Athletics, the international governing body of athletics, the Russian approach meets with rejection. "We acknowledge the appeal by the Russian Athletics Federation to the CAS and will vigorously defend our position," the governing body was quoted as saying by the US news agency Associated Press. The umbrella organization is therefore bracing itself for a lengthy legal dispute, the outcome of which could also have a signaling effect for other sports.
