Iran has rejected a French proposal for a joint mine clearance operation in the Strait of Hormuz with partner states, citing an existing framework agreement.

The proposal from Paris

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kasem Gharibabadi declared on the X platform that a joint mine clearance operation in the strait was not permissible. Tehran would never allow such an operation. As justification, he cited a framework agreement that assigns jurisdiction for mine clearance exclusively to Iran. With this, Tehran is positioning itself against an initiative that France had been advancing together with Great Britain.

The starting point of the diplomatic dispute was a meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, in Paris. Subsequently, Macron announced on the X platform that France wished to participate with its partners in the mine clearance in the strait. The goal was to secure the sea lanes and ensure a "free and unconditional" passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
