Iran's national football team plays its first World Cup match against New Zealand under the shadow of an ongoing conflict with the USA. Captain Mehdi Taremi spoke openly about the tense atmosphere at the pre-match press conference the day before in Los Angeles.
The Iranian squad arrived together in the United States on Monday afternoon, one day before their Group G opener against New Zealand. The arrival deviated from the original plans: due to the war and political tensions with the USA, Iran had moved its World Cup base camp at short notice from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. The players were originally only supposed to enter the country on matchdays and leave immediately after the games.
