Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced a new round of talks with Lebanon for mid-July in Rome, while simultaneously reaffirming the Israeli army's continued presence in a self-defined "security zone" in southern Lebanon.
The diplomatic initiative comes amid renewed tensions on Israel's northern border. According to a spokesperson, Katz stated that Israel would remain in the self-defined "security zone" in Lebanon and operate from there for as long as necessary until Hezbollah is disarmed throughout Lebanon and the threat to residents of northern Israel is eliminated. According to a dpa report, the talks are to take place in mid-July in Rome, with no details on participants or agenda yet disclosed.
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz is conditioning any withdrawal from southern Lebanon on the full disarmament of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia. According to Katz, the area controlled by Israel is "free of residents and of terrorist infrastructure above and below ground." This portrayal does not align with reports from Lebanon, according to which civilians continue to remain in the region and the situation is criticized as an occupation.
