Jerusalem, May 12, 2026
On Monday, the Israeli parliament approved a special tribunal to prosecute and potentially sentence to death Palestinians involved in the Hamas-led attacks of October 2023.
Overwhelming Approval in Parliament
The bill passed the Knesset with 93 votes in favor and 0 against out of 120 seats, demonstrating broad support for punishing those responsible for the deadliest attack in Israel's history. The remaining 27 lawmakers were either absent or abstained.
Simcha Rothman, one of the bill's sponsors and a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition, emphasized the unity of the lawmakers: "around a common mission." The vote highlighted political consensus on the issue.
Comparison to the Eichmann Trial
The new tribunal allows a panel of judges to impose the death penalty by a simple majority. Trials will take place in a Jerusalem courtroom broadcast live—a process reminiscent of the 1962 trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, which was also televised.
