Ashkelon, Israel — May 3, 2026 Israel extends detention of Gaza activists after flotilla Israeli authorities have extended the detention of two activists—a Spaniard and a Brazilian—after intercepting a pro-Palestinian flotilla in international waters off Crete.

Flotilla Intercepted in International Waters

The Israeli Navy intercepted 21 ships belonging to the "Global Sumud Flotilla" west of Crete late Wednesday night, detaining 175 individuals on board, according to official statements. The flotilla, organized by international activists, aimed to break Israel's maritime blockade of Gaza.

Among those detained were Spanish national Saif Abu Keschek and Brazilian Thiago Avila, whose custody has been extended by Israeli authorities. Avila faces accusations of "illegale Aktivitäten" ("illegal activities"), though specific charges have not been publicly detailed.

The Austrian branch of the "Global Movement to Gaza," an international network, confirmed its involvement in the flotilla, stating it had dispatched delegates aboard the ships and provided logistical support, fundraising, and campaign coordination.
