The Israeli Air Force struck targets in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Sunday, after the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia had previously attacked northern Israel with explosive drones.
Scale of the strikes and casualty toll
The strikes hit "terror targets" of Hezbollah in the southern suburbs known as Dahiyeh, according to a joint statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. The Israeli army also said Hezbollah infrastructure in Dahiyeh had been struck. According to the Israeli military, a Hezbollah command center in Beirut was among the targets hit.
Residents reported at least two explosions to local media, according to accounts. Arab television channels showed images of rising plumes of smoke, heavily damaged buildings and a destroyed street. Witnesses said the building that was struck had housed a Hezbollah office.
