Israel Orders Evacuation of 10 Villages in Southern Lebanon as Ceasefire Violations Mount

The evacuation order comes amid a fragile ceasefire that has been in effect since mid-April and was recently extended by 45 days. However, both sides accuse each other of breaching the truce.

A Ceasefire Under Strain

According to Lebanese reports, two people were killed in the latest fighting. Israeli's military said one of its soldiers, a 19-year-old, was "im Kampf gefallen" (fallen in battle). On the Lebanese side, authorities say more than 3,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict, including 123 rescue workers and medical personnel.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has not recognized the ceasefire and continues to attack northern Israel. The Israeli army has also carried out repeated strikes in southern Lebanon in recent weeks.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun criticized the Israeli attacks, saying: "Die israelischen Angriffe haben nicht aufgehört und unsere Dörfer im Süden leiden noch immer unter der erneuten Besatzung." He stressed that a full Israeli withdrawal is a non-negotiable demand: "Der Weg zu einem vollständigen israelischen Rückzug bleibt eine unumstößliche Forderung, an deren Verwirklichung der libanesische Staat durch Verhandlungen arbeitet."

Political Upheaval in Beirut

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Kassim escalated the rhetoric by calling for the overthrow of the Lebanese government. In a televised speech, he said: "Wenn diese Regierung nicht in der Lage ist, Souveränität herzustellen, dann sollte sie gehen." He described the government as an "amerikanisch-israelisches Projekt, das die Institutionen des Landes angreift."

Kassim also rejected demands for the militia's disarmament. "Wir werden die Waffen so lange in unseren Händen halten, bis der libanesische Staat in der Lage ist, seine Pflicht zu erfüllen zum Schutz und Erhalt des Libanon, seines Volkes und seiner Ressourcen," he said, according to Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV.

Since mid-April, Lebanon and Israel have been holding direct political-level talks for the first time in decades, mediated by the United States in Washington. Hezbollah's disarmament is a central point in the negotiations, but the militia is not participating.

Diplomacy Amidst Rising Fears

The political crisis has raised fears of a repeat of past violence. In May 2008, the government's attempt to dismantle Hezbollah's communications network led to days of bloody clashes in Beirut that killed dozens. Lebanon also endured a devastating civil war from 1975 to 1990 with tens of thousands of deaths.
