Turkish officials in Ankara have reacted sharply, viewing any unilateral Israeli presence on Syrian soil close to Turkish territory as a direct provocation.

Behind the public exchanges lies a broader realignment of regional alliances. Turkey, which backed opposition factions during the Syrian conflict, has positioned itself as a key interlocutor with Syria's new authorities. Israel, by contrast, has accelerated contacts with Syrian actors seen as more amenable to cooperation, including parts of the Syrian Democratic Forces and Druze leadership in the south.

A wider realignment of regional alliances

The United States has emerged as an awkward mediator. US Special Envoy Tom Barrack has held separate conversations with Israeli, Turkish and Syrian counterparts in recent weeks, urging de-escalation. Washington is wary that an open rupture between two NATO partners and a key Middle Eastern ally could derail fragile negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme and the reconstruction of Syrian institutions.

Iran remains a central variable. Israeli officials have warned repeatedly that Tehran could exploit the power vacuum in Damascus to re-establish supply lines to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Turkey, for its part, has accused Israel of using the Iranian threat as cover for territorial expansion, a charge Israeli diplomats reject.

The diplomatic row has practical consequences. Commercial flights between Israel and Turkey have already been reduced, and Turkish customs officials have begun secondary inspections of Israeli cargo transiting Turkish ports. Tourism operators in Antalya have reported a wave of cancellations from Israeli travellers for the autumn season.

Practical fallout and international reaction

Analysts caution that the airfield question may be more symbolic than strategic. Even if Israel secured access, the logistical challenge of operating an unmanned facility 80 kilometres from a hostile border would be considerable. Yet the rhetorical escalation serves domestic political purposes on both sides, hardening the positions of hardliners in Ankara and Jerusalem.

International reaction has been muted but watchful. European Union foreign policy officials have called on both governments to exercise restraint, while Gulf states have signalled quiet support for Israel, reflecting their shared concern about Iranian influence in Syria.

The episode underscores how the post-Assad transition in Syria has redrawn the region's fault lines. With Russia preoccupied by Ukraine, Iran weakened, and the United States pursuing selective engagement, Israel and Turkey increasingly find themselves competing for influence in a fragmented Syrian state, raising the risk of miscalculation along an already volatile frontier.
