The Israeli parliament passed the controversial "Torah Basic Law" on Monday, which enshrines the study of religious texts as a foundational value of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

The members of the Knesset voted by a majority to officially declare the study of religious texts a "foundational value of the Jewish people and the State of Israel." According to its own statements, Israel does not have a formal constitution; instead, so-called "Basic Laws" determine the legal framework of the country.

The passage is seen as a massive concession by Benjamin Netanyahu to his ultra-Orthodox coalition partners. Netanyahu himself stayed away from the vote, which underscored the explosiveness of the decision.
