The Israeli parliament passed a law demanded by ultra-Orthodox parties in the evening in its third and final reading, declaring the study of religious texts a "fundamental value of the Jewish people and the State of Israel" and giving ultra-Orthodox Jews expanded possibilities to refuse military service.
With the passage of the law, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secures the support of the ultra-Orthodox parties. In the last two readings, 63 Knesset members voted for the corresponding bill, 52 voted against. Netanyahu did not attend the vote.
