A lottery player from Bitonto in the southern Italian region of Apulia threw her million-euro lottery ticket into the trash following a misunderstanding, after which the municipal waste disposal company SANB searched through the garbage for hours and recovered the ticket.

According to several Italian media outlets and the news agency AFP, the woman initially threw the lottery ticket into the trash because she apparently believed she had not won. Only afterward did she realize that it was a win in the six-figure range.

The case quickly caused a stir in the Apulia region because, according to the reports, the ticket showed winnings of more than two million euros. The woman then turned to the municipal waste company SANB, which is responsible for waste disposal in Bitonto.
