Rome, June 28, 2026
Italy is heading toward the peak of a heatwave classified as exceptional and of African origin on Sunday and Monday (June 28 and 29, 2026), with peak values of up to 40°C and increased strain on emergency rooms.
According to available forecasts, the heatwave will reach its zenith between Sunday, June 28, and Monday, June 29. Maximum temperatures between 30 and 38°C are expected in several regions of Italy, with peak values of 39 to 40°C possible between Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Umbria. Minimum temperatures in the early morning hours are frequently around 24 to 25°C, meaning the heat load barely cools down.
The zero-degree limit in the Alps approaches the threshold of 5,000 meters, considered exceptional, during the two critical days. Combined with very high humidity, this creates an oppressive sultriness that persists during the day and at night. According to available data, the perceived heat stress in the Po Valley reaches a very intense level, just below the highest category.
