Jakob Pöltl sees Toronto Raptors facing realistic championship chance in the NBA

Pöltl as the anchor of the defense

Pöltl has repeatedly been called upon as the anchor of the Raptors' defense. The Austrian is one of the most experienced players on the team and is expected to provide stability to a young guard featuring Kawhi Leonard. Leonard was already a key player for the Canadian side during their 2019 championship season.

The competition in the Eastern Conference is strong, however. The Cleveland Cavaliers, featuring Jarrett Allen — who, alongside Pöltl, ranks among the league's best defensive centers — are considered one of the main rivals. Other teams have also strengthened their rosters, meaning the Raptors once again face a high hurdle to clear.

Competition in the Eastern Conference

Pöltl himself views the starting position with composure. He does not want to lean too far out the window, but stressed that the team does not need to hide from anyone. Preparations for the new season are proceeding as planned according to the Viennese player, and physical fitness is in order.

In Toronto, expectations for the season have been the subject of intense discussion for weeks. Following the departure of several veterans and the simultaneous rise of young homegrown players, the team is seen as a box of surprises. Pöltl's comments nevertheless give the fan base confidence.

Outlook on the season

The NBA Regular Season begins in October. Until then, training camp and preseason games are on the schedule. Pöltl wants to harness the momentum from the offseason and, through consistent work, ensure that Toronto once again ends the season right at the top.

From a Viennese perspective, the commitment of the only Austrian NBA player is a showcase for domestic basketball. Pöltl recently emphasized that he wants to continue cultivating his collaboration with the federation and his focus on youth development, in parallel with his duties in the world's strongest league.
