A quarterback reaches for a trash bag

As a video posted by him and the NFL on social media shows, the quarterback eagerly pitched in himself. Winston held a Fox microphone in his hand while wearing a Japan jersey with his name and the number 4 on the back. The 2015 first-round pick from Alabama, currently under contract with the New York Giants, is working as an expert for the network during the World Cup.

Jameis Winston, quarterback of the New York Giants, also grabbed blue bags and collected trash. Before the blue plastic bags were used for their actual purpose, the Japanese fans had swung them back and forth while celebrating the late equalizer by Daichi Kamada (89th minute). The blue bags were part of the celebration of the late point shared against the Netherlands.

A cultural tradition since 1998

The World Cup match between Japan and the Netherlands ended 2:2 on Sunday at the Dallas stadium. After the 2:2 in Japan's World Cup opener against the Netherlands, the cleanup effort and the prominent involvement of the NFL pro quickly became the focus of coverage. Jameis Winston has earned roughly $80 million during his NFL career – and yet he still reached for a trash bag after the celebrations.

Japanese fans are probably the cleanest and most peaceful in the entire world. After every match, they stay in the stadium and clean up the trash themselves. The Samurai Blue thus continued their tradition, cultivated for decades, which is likely unique in its consistency in the homeland of football. Such scenes had already occurred at Japan's World Cup debut in 1998 in France and at every tournament appearance since.

NFL career so far

Political and history professor Koichi Nakano explained the cultural background to the AP news agency: "Japanische Sportfans, die bei internationalen Veranstaltungen das Stadion sauber halten, verhalten sich im Grunde genauso wie damals, als sie als Schulkinder die Freude am Sport entdeckten." Nakano therefore sees the gesture less as a global message and more as a habit learned early on.

For Winston, who accompanied the game from the perspective of an expert, the effort became a small hero's story: instead of commentating from the stadium, he grabbed the blue bags himself that had previously served as celebration props. Photos and video clips show the quarterback in full Japan gear with microphone and trash bag, collecting waste between the seating rows.

Reactions online

The incident is reminiscent of numerous similar scenes from past tournaments in which Japanese fans walked through the stands with bags after matches. The fact that a prominent US athlete – wearing the jersey of a foreign team, no less, and in the stadium of his archrivals – joined the action drew international attention and underscored the cultural character of the gesture.

Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament in the USA, it remains to be seen whether other well-known athletes will follow Winston's example. For the New York Giants quarterback, the appearance was at least a welcome change of pace from preparing for the NFL season, which now sees him in the Giants' jersey after years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints.

Reactions on social media were overwhelmingly positive. Many users praised the quarterback for his effort and the symbolic gesture that bridged boundaries between sports and cultures. Winston himself has not yet commented extensively on the incident, but the video with the trash bag in his hand spoke for itself.
