Raúl Jiménez scored his first World Cup goal in the 67th minute of Mexico's 2-0 opening win over South Africa at the Azteca Stadium and has been wearing a headband to protect his surgical scar since his comeback.

The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and was played in front of more than 80,000 spectators. Mexico ultimately prevailed 2-0 over South Africa, with Raúl Jiménez scoring the decisive second goal. The striker appeared at a World Cup for the first time and at the same time celebrated a personal milestone.

Jiménez's goal in the 67th minute was not only his first at a World Cup finals, but simultaneously his 45th international goal for Mexico. He thus further extended his position as the third-highest goalscorer of the Mexican national team, as reported by dpa. The leader remains Javier Hernández with 52 goals, ahead of Jared Borgetti with 46.
