Joseph Lorenz embodies the title hero from Joseph Roth's novella "Die Legende vom heiligen Trinker" in a new production by Alexandra Liedtke in Reichenau, receiving standing ovations for his performance.

The production is based on Roth's posthumously published novella, which appeared in 1939 in Amsterdam. For her adaptation, Liedtke has woven in not only the well-known text but also other Roth writings as well as excerpts from letters by Stefan Zweig to Roth. The result is a 100-minute evening of theater without intermission.

Joseph Lorenz plays Andreas Kartak, a homeless alcoholic who, after his release from prison, lives under the bridges of the Seine in Paris. In the novella, Kartak promises to repay borrowed money at the statue of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux in the chapel of Ste Marie des Batignolles. In the end, he dies in the sacristy as he has almost reached Saint Thérèse.
