Justice Department lawyers told a federal judge this week that the Kennedy Center risks deterioration into an unsafe structure that may have to be torn down if a years-long renovation plan is not allowed to proceed.

In a filing submitted late Monday, attorneys for the Justice Department said that without renovations, the performing arts venue in Washington "will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down." The lawyers added that, if demolition became necessary, decisions would then need to be made "on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years."
