Justice Department attorney Yaakov Roth told the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday that the federal government could destroy the Statue of Liberty and the White House, and that descendants of enslaved people who built the White House and immigrants who passed through Ellis Island would have no legal standing to challenge such a decision.
The exchange came during oral argument in a case over a new White House East Wing ballroom that Donald Trump is pressing to build. Roth, made the remark while answering hypothetical questions from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson about who could sue over changes to historic federal property, according to two people familiar with the argument.
