The US Supreme Court has temporarily allowed construction of a planned ballroom at the White House East Wing to continue while legal challenges to the project proceed.

The high court's decision pauses an order from a federal judge in Washington that had halted work on the project. The temporary stay gives the administration time to file its full appeal before the court considers whether to take up the case.

In a 14 August filing, Justice Department lawyers urged the justices to block the lower-court ruling, calling it "an extraordinary and unlawful injunction that will halt the ongoing construction of the integrated military complex, including a totally secure ballroom space, at the East Wing of the White House, which is vitally required by national security." The administration has framed the project as essential infrastructure for the executive branch.
