London, July 18, 2026
Scottish middle-distance runner Josh Kerr broke the world record in the mile (1609 m) at the Diamond League meeting in London, surpassing the mark that had stood since 1999, set by Hicham El Guerrouj.
The 28-year-old Scot covered the distance in 3:42.66 minutes, bettering the nearly 27-year-old record of the Moroccan middle-distance star Hicham El Guerrouj, who had set a time of 3:43.13 minutes in 1999. Kerr, the 2023 world champion over 1500 m and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, had announced months ago that he intended to attack the world record over the traditional but non-Olympic mile in London.
Duplantis loses to Kendricks
Victory in the pole vault went to American Sam Kendricks, who also cleared 5.95 m, relegating Duplantis to second place. The world record holder appeared at a loss after the competition: «Ich weiss ehrlich gesagt nicht, wie ich die 5,95 m geschafft habe», he said in an interview with SRF. Duplantis hoped that an injury would not be too serious and that he would be fit again at the latest for the European Championships in Birmingham (starting August 10).
