Swedish pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis was beaten on home soil for the first time in nearly three years at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, clearing 5.80 meters and finishing second.
At Stockholm's Olympic Stadium, the 26-year-old, who grew up and trains in the Swedish capital, could only manage 5.80 meters on Sunday. As a result, Duplantis, nicknamed "Mondo," lost to Australia's Kurtis Marschall, who won the competition with a clearance of 5.90 meters. For the triple title holder – Olympic champion, world champion, and world record holder – it was, by his own account, an off day.
„Ich bin einfach schlecht gesprungen, ich weiß wirklich nicht so richtig, was ich sagen soll", said Duplantis in an interview with ARD. He said he had been unable to truly focus on any of his attempts. He had already opened the competition with a failed attempt at 5.60 meters before clearing the subsequent heights, but ultimately fell short at 5.80 meters.
