Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, has rejected the Asean bloc's call for dialogue on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula as a "foolish pipedream" and accused the alliance of taking a one-sided stance in favor of the United States.
Background of the Asean appeal
The sister of the North Korean ruler spoke on Monday via the state news agency KCNA about the outcomes of the latest Asean Regional Forum. She expressed her "great dissatisfaction with the blatantly hostile attitude of the forum" and accused the bloc of allowing itself to be instrumentalized by Washington.
The background to the dispute is the Asean call, made at the regional forum last week, expressing "grave concern" over the North Korean nuclear weapons program and calling for talks on a nuclear-free peninsula. The Asean was thereby "joining in the talk about 'denuclearization' spread by the USA" and ignoring the North Korean constitution, Kim Yo Jong said according to KCNA.
