Kitzbühel Mayor Klaus Winkler (ÖVP) spoke to the „Tiroler Tageszeitung" (TT) about a narrowly averted disaster: „Wir sind knapp an einer Katastrophe vorbeigeschrammt." Regarding the geography at the Horn intersection, he said: „Der Bereich mit Eisenbahn und Straße ist dort sehr schwierig."

As an immediate consequence of the incident, Winkler announced that the city is already in concrete contact with the Verkehrsverbund Tirol (Tyrol Transport Association), „damit der Bus dort nicht mehr fährt" ("so that the bus no longer travels there"). This is intended to prevent such an incident from recurring at this location.

Consequences for the Driver

The bus driver in question has been initially suspended from duty. As the railway announced, he is currently „nicht im Lenkdienst" ("not in driving service"). They immediately subjected the matter to an internal review and will „zeitnah über disziplinarische Maßnahmen für den Mitarbeiter entscheiden" ("decide on disciplinary measures for the employee in a timely manner").

The investigations into the exact cause are ongoing. It remains unclear, among other things, why the driver claimed not to have noticed the red signal and whether technical or organizational circumstances played a role.

There are no final figures on the exact number of children affected; school transport services on this route typically serve several schools in the region. Whether the children will receive psychological aftercare following the incident was not initially announced.

The ÖBB pointed out that railway crossings in Austria are generally particularly well secured, with barriers, light signals, and acoustic signals in place. Nevertheless, risky maneuvers by other road users continue to occur.
