Kitzbühel, 03 July 2026

A school bus carrying around 30 children and several adults came to a halt on a railway crossing at the so-called Horn intersection in Kitzbühel (Kitzbühel district, Tyrol) last Wednesday despite a red signal, prompting an approaching train to perform an emergency braking maneuver.

According to the current state of the investigation, police assumed that the driver of the postal bus ignored the red signal of the railway barriers and drove onto the crossing anyway. As the Kitzbühel district police command told APA, the man stated in an interview that he believed „dass es noch nicht Rot war“ ("that it was not yet red").

The bus was ultimately trapped by the descending barrier. According to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), the train was already „in der Nähe“ ("in the vicinity") at the time of the incident. The locomotive driver initiated an emergency braking maneuver, so that the train came to a stop just in time. As of now, no one was injured.
