Following a knife attack on three teenagers in Austria, in which a 15-year-old was critically injured, Integration Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) has reaffirmed her call to lower the age of criminal responsibility in Austria from 14 to 12.
The attack occurred on Thursday and was directed against three teenagers. A 15-year-old was critically injured, and two other boys sustained injuries. A 12-year-old Syrian was arrested as the suspected perpetrator. Because the suspect is only 12 years old, he is legally not of criminal responsibility under current law.
The Integration Minister used the incident to renew her long-standing demand for a lowering of the age of criminal responsibility. Bauer argues that it is a "fatale Message an Gewalttäter" when victims must be treated in hospital while the perpetrators are allowed to return "unbehelligt zur Mutter nach Hause."
Bauer's Criticism of the Legal Situation
The ÖVP politician sharply criticized the current legal framework. "Wenn 12-Jährige rauben, vergewaltigen oder auf andere mit Messern einstechen, dann muss man etwas dagegen tun," she said. In her view, innocent classmates are put at risk if the laws are not adjusted.
