Lando Norris extends contract at McLaren and targets more titles

His teammate Oscar Piastri had already extended his contract at McLaren for several years. This means the British racing team's driver pairing is likely to remain intact for the foreseeable future.

Piastri stays – the duo stays

Team principal Andrea Stella sees the extension as a logical next step. The duo of Norris and Piastri had led McLaren back to the top of the sport in recent seasons and won the constructors' world championship.

In Formula 1, McLaren had recorded an upward trend over many years, culminating in winning the drivers' and constructors' titles. With continuity in the driver lineup, those in charge want to prevent rivals such as Mercedes or Red Bull from exploiting personnel weaknesses.

However, competition in the premier class remains strong. Drivers such as Kimi Antonelli are considered future challengers, and other teams are also continuing to invest in their drivers. McLaren is counting on securing its sporting advantage through stability.

Outlook on the new season

Norris emphasised that he feels comfortable at McLaren both professionally and personally. Talks about the extension were constructive and quick, according to those close to the driver.

Looking ahead to the coming seasons, Norris set the bar himself: more wins, more titles, ideally a continuation of the dominance. McLaren is likely to share these ambitions, as the contract extension is also a signal to sponsors and partners.

Piastri scored points in several races last year and established himself as a consistent number two driver. The combination of experience, speed and youthful ambition is regarded within the team as one of the strongest pairings in the current field.

It remains unclear exactly how long the new agreement runs. McLaren only stated that it is a long-term contract. Details on the duration and financial terms were not released.

For the coming season, McLaren, together with Norris and Piastri, is considered one of the favourites to win both world championships again.
