Vienna, July 20, 2026
According to a representative survey conducted by Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA), around 85 percent of Austrians support a ban on the destruction of new, unsold clothing, while 94 percent demand mandatory recycling rules for textiles starting in 2028.
High Approval for Mandatory Recycling
The results show broad public support for stricter regulations in dealing with textiles. 94 percent of those surveyed are in favor of broken textiles having to be recycled from 2028 onward and no longer being disposed of in residual waste. In addition, 94 percent consider it important that textiles be kept in the loop to a greater extent.
At the same time, there is a strong willingness to take action oneself. People in Austria are in any case willing "ihren Beitrag zu leisten und Textilien getrennt zu sammeln", according to the survey. 84 percent want more education on proper disposal, and one in three cites additional collection containers in the residential environment as a motivator for separate collection.
