Who is behind the discovery?

The background is the criticism that Latvia has directed at the government of Belarus for years. Together with Lithuania and Poland, Riga accuses the leadership in Minsk of deliberately bringing people from crisis regions to the EU's external border in order to exert pressure on the European Union. Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have repeatedly raised these accusations in bilateral talks and at the EU level, pointing to a coordinated approach on the Belarusian side.

The tunnel now discovered is regarded as further evidence for the thesis of organized smuggling. Background: Accusations against Belarus

The authorities did not rule out that similar structures could exist along other sections of the more than 170-kilometer-long Latvian-Belarusian border.

At the same time, Riga continues to seek coordination with Brussels in order to secure EU support for border protection in the long term.

The Belarusian government has not initially commented officially on the specific incident. In earlier statements, representatives of the country had consistently rejected accusations of organized smuggling as unfounded and referred to the sovereignty of their own migration policy.

Observers assess the discovery as proof that the Latvian authorities are likely to further intensify their surveillance along the eastern border. At the same time, it is expected that the EU states will take up the issue at upcoming meetings, as cross-border smuggling between Belarus and the EU affects several member states simultaneously.
