Leaked documents show that Russia and China have been working closely together at secret meetings since 2023 to weaken the Starlink satellite system and jointly develop missile defense systems.
As reported by "Spiegel" together with "Le Monde" and the Russian investigative outlet "The Insider," the documents show that Moscow and Beijing view Starlink as a threat and are coordinating countermeasures. At a meeting in June 2023, the Chinese side presented measures that could be used against the satellite system. Publications were produced within the circle of the Chinese People's Liberation Army that discussed concrete scenarios.
The findings about the substantial extent of Chinese support for the Russian military are extremely concerning, an unnamed source told "Spiegel." Starlink plays a central role in the Ukraine war: reconnaissance data is transmitted through the network in near real time, artillery is directed, and combat drones are guided to their targets. In addition, Starlink is used to supply front-line positions and evacuate the wounded.
