The Lehár Festival in Bad Ischl opened its 65th season on Saturday evening with Franz von Suppé's operetta "Boccaccio," staged by festival director Thomas Enzinger to enthusiastic audience applause.
The performance marked the formal start of a season that festival director Thomas Enzinger has framed around the theme of humanism in operetta. Speaking before the curtain, Enzinger posed a rhetorical question to the audience about whether operetta and humanism could belong together, and then answered it himself in the affirmative. "Operette und Humanismus – passt das überhaupt zusammen?" he asked, before concluding: "Oh ja, denn wenn man genau hinsieht, steckt in der Operette ein tiefes humanistisches Element: Sie stellt den Menschen in den Mittelpunkt – mit all seinen Emotionen, Sehnsüchten, Freuden, Schmerzen und mit seinem Humor."
